Amityville freshman, junior fire department captain faces surgery after being hit by car

An Amityville High School freshman known across the school district for his work in the drama club, performance with a local band and as a captain in the local Junior Fire Department is facing a long recovery after being hit by a car Monday in Amityville.

Fourteen-year-old Jack Nehring suffered an orbital fracture in the crash and is expected to need surgery, ongoing medical care and an extended stretch away from school, according to a GoFundMe launched by family friend Kayla Cooper.

By Thursday, more than 320 contributions totaling over $28,000 had flowed into the fundraiser. Organizers said it’s a reflection of how deeply the Nehring family is woven into the Amityville community.

Jack is a member of Tri-M Music Honor Society and the National Junior Honor Society. He has performed in Drama Club productions in middle school and high school.

Additionally, he volunteers locally and works a part-time job, Cooper wrote.

The teen’s parents are similarly active in the district: his father Chris sits on the Amityville Board of Education, and his mother Elizabeth serves as president of the Amityville 6-12 PTSA and helps administer a local parenting group.

“Now it is our turn to show up for them,” Cooper wrote in the fundraiser, which will help cover medical bills, surgery, lost wages while Jack’s parents help him recover, transportation to appointments and other related costs in the weeks ahead.
