Some are life-long artists and for others this is their first piece of artwork in an exhibit — but there is one thing both of these groups have in common, they are are all older than 50.
That’s the idea behind the new “Art at 50-Plus” exhibition happening now at the Islip Arts Museum, located at the Brookwood Hall Mansion at 50 Irish Lane in East Islip.
The show — ran by the Islip Arts Council and sponsored by AARP — features work from nearly 150 artists, who either live currently or are from Long Island.
“Every piece of work has a meaningful story,” said the exhibit’s curator, Holly Gordon.
One of those meaningful stories comes from 80-plus-year-old painter Alma Pancir who submitted her work, Sunset.
“Alma and her husband rode their bikes to Hecksher Park at night and would drink wine and eat dinner,” explained Gordon. “This was her memory.”
In total, there are nearly 200 pieces, which range in art mediums but all describe one thing: Long Island. There are pieces dedicated to the people of Long Island, the landscape, wildlife, and nature.
“It is so diverse,” said Gordon.
The show, which runs until Jan. 15., is free to enter, but there is a $5 recommended donation.
Tea and art
The Islip Arts Council will be hosting a “Tea at 3” event at the museum. For $10, the show’s curator will be discussing the show while tea will be served on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 3 p.m.
