Saturday, April 27, will be a big day (and night) for the arts in Patchogue Village.
First, it’s Patchogue Arts Council’s Artful Antics festival kickoff day, which runs from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Events are being held at Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts and various other locations.

The kickoff culminates with a big reveal.
When the day is done, it’s not. Anyone who participated, or didn’t, is then invited to Toast Coffeehouse for an after party that’s being co-hosted by Patchogue Arts Council and the Patchogue Young Professionals networking and development group. The after party starts at 7 p.m.
The night will feature art, entertainment, beer, wine, bits and greet screen fun. That entertainment includes Jacqueline Routh and Anthony Pravata (pictured below) playing for the first time as a duo.

We will begin in the lobby of the historic Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts located @ 71 East Main Street. 1:30 – 2:30 PM guests will be entertained by an afternoon of performance, poetry and music. Audiences will be treated to performances by Alexa Dexa, Robert Stenzel as Voltar, C.A. Nicola as Capricieux, costume and interpretive dance by Michael Krasowitz, & Wendi Weng.3:00 – 4:00 PM Promenade with us! Inspired by a New Orleans style promenade we welcome and encourage all to join us in costume and promenade down the sidewalks of Main Street to Roe Walkway and down the newly installed Pathway to the Arts. Live music provided by Alexa Dexa and Creature Fur. We will stop for a group photo and cut a ceremonial ribbon to mark the occasion of this completely public art project by the Patchogue Village CDA – Community Development Agency.
4:00 – 5:30 PM Antics ensue at the Patchogue Arts Council.
We will gather for the big reveal of PAC’s secret and get the first look at their re-branding! Then come inside and experience Pest in the Garden, a special pop-up installation by artist Jennie Thwing. Join us and the artist for a reception to celebrate.

ABOUT ARTFUL ANTICS FESTIVAL SEASON 2019 (AAFS)
For many of us, the arts fill a valuable role of release from daily stress.
This year’s Artful Antics Festival Season 2019 (AAFS) from April through October will create an atmosphere that celebrates whimsy, humor, joy, and play from April – October.
AAFS will feature gallery exhibits, public art, and sculptural installations in the garden, film screenings, nights of live music and performance, and a new mural sponsored by PAC and the Patchogue-Medford Library on the library’s rear wall. The Arts on Terry (AOT) street art fair on June 23rd from noon to 6:00 PM is a full day of art exhibits, organizations, galleries, and artists from across L.I., demonstrations, family friendly activities, live music and performances.
ABOUT OUR EVENT ARTISTS
Jennie Thwing is a New York-based artist and animator and an Assistant Professor at Farmingdale State College SUNY. She received her BFA from Tyler School of Art and her MFA from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. She has exhibited her art work nationally and internationally, in solo and group shows in countries such as Norway, Czechoslovakia, Germany, and Great Britain. She has attended artist residencies in the USA, Canada, Norway and New Zealand and received numerous awards, including the Meyer Family Award for Contemporary Art, the Center for Emerging Visual Artists Fellowship, the SPARC Artist in Residence Grant and several Queens Arts Fund Grants.
Pest in the Garden is an installation featuring a cut-paper animation and wall mural. In the animation, a garden grows as insect-humans emerge from flowers. The installation hints at man’s love for nature and resulting parasitic tendencies. It is also a metaphor for the relationship between parents and their children.
Alexa Dexa is a composer, electronic sound designer, and performer noted as “an example of pure charm and whimsy” by The New York Times and “unarguably personifying DIY for the millennium” by Creative Loafing Atlanta. Her toychestral electronic pop solo project parades her soulful vocals, labyrinthine electronic sound worlds, and enough instruments made with children in mind to rival a playpen. An adventurer at heart, Alexa spends 4-6 months out of the year independently touring the world. Her self-booked tours have taken her throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Oceania, & Asia. She is currently composing an electroacoustic toy opera, “Be a Doll”, which will have its full workshop in June of 2019. Be a Doll is an electroacoustic toy opera for solo vocalist performing choreographed play routines on musical and nonmusical toys with live and pre-programmed electronics. Living in a dollhouse, a woman carries out the traditional role of pretty plaything and keeper of the home. An existential game of hide-and-seek emerges as the distinction between woman and doll diminishes. Musical instruments used include toy piano, pitched desk bells, hand-cranked music box with hand-cranked music box with hand-punched music scroll, kalimba, toy chimes, toy glockenspiel, toy organ, melodica, toy xylophone, toy harp, toy banjo, and various toy percussions.
Robert Stenzel is a mixed media and fiber artist, primarily working in a unique form of fabric collage. Although many of his works are fabric dreamscapes created on a sewing machine, he also enjoys painting and paper mache. A New York native, these days he is living on this beautiful sand bar by its famously haunted lake. However, his works are also heavily inspired by his years spent in the visual and performing arts community of the great State of Jefferson, where he lived as a Space Pirate and amateur circus performer from 2004 to 2013. He believes that besides creating things that look beautiful, an emphasis on using found and upcycled materials, along with community engagement, is essential to continuing the conversation of art.
C.A. Nicola is a performance artist and actor from Huntington, NY. His training in clowning and physical comedy has helped shape his unique style of performance, along with the multiple characters he has created for the stage. He is also the founder and producer of the neo-vaudeville variety show Big Red Balloon.
Michael Krasowitz has been exploring his own psyche for over 30 years….mining the resources of the subconscious for archetypal imagery. He creates intuitively and has developed his own language using automatic drawing. His art clothing project is designed to bring art to our nominal daily experience and force a confrontation with art and the social constraints of our day to day experience.
Wendi Weng came to the United States 3 years ago to develop her ideas for dance. She is originally from China and has studied Middle Eastern dance. She is currently choreographing narrative tone poems based on interactions between cultures…particularly cross cultural ideas from the Silk Road.
ABOUT PATHWAY TO THE ARTS
Roe Walkway is a public art installation by the Patchogue Community Development Agency, the Department of Public Works, and the Village of Patchogue. The Patchogue Arts Council (PAC), as arts consultant to the Community Development Agency (CDA), conducted a search for artists to submit final designs for custom pavers that are now incorporated into a permanent public art path that leads from the Roe Archway through the parking lot to Terry Street, home of the Patchogue Arts Council, Artspace Lofts, and the Plaza Cinema and Media Arts Center. Patchogue’s Pathway to the Arts leads to Long Island’s first official arts district.
