Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino has been a longtime supporter of Save the Great South Bay, a nonprofit leading the revitalization of the namesake bay and its connecting waterways.
To thank the mayor, the organization’s executive director, Marshall Brown, presented Scordino with its Environmental Stewardship Award at Tuesday night’s Babylon Village board of trustees meeting.
“[This award] is in recognition of Ralph’s wonderful work over the years, in particular as a friend of our organization,” said Brown, who was born in Babylon.
With Scordino’s help, the not-for-profit was able to launch its Creek Defender program in the village — an initiative to clean up Great South Bay’s tributaries along the South Shore.
Additionally, Save the Great South Bay was able to create a native forest along Carll’s River (under Park Avenue) and a swamp forest the tennis courts near Southards Pond.
And, most recently, the village relaunched its Mayor’s Cup Regatta and Clambake last weekend, which benefitted Brown’s charity.
“It is so important to keep the Great South Bay,” said the mayor while accepting the honor. “Without the bay or the creeks we have in our village, what’s the point of being here.
“It is true to my heart, and I will always be a supporter of Save the Great South Bay.”
Going forward, Brown says this award will be given yearly at the new, restarted Mayor’s Cup Regatta.
