Fatal Sunrise Highway crash disrupts morning commute in Bay Shore

A male pedestrian was struck and killed on Sunrise Highway early Thursday, prompting a prolonged eastbound shutdown that left rush hour commuters heading west passing a grim scene.

Suffolk Police said the crash occurred about 5:20 a.m. Major Case Unit detectives are investigating whether the pedestrian was in the express lanes of eastbound Sunrise Highway or on the eastbound service road when he was hit.

Police have not released the pedestrian’s identity.

UPDATE: Cops make arrest in fatal pedestrian strike

Sunrise Highway’s eastbound lanes were shut down for hours as detectives examined the scene. By 7 a.m., westbound rush hour commuters and other early-morning travelers reported seeing a body at the scene, mostly concealed beneath a yellow covering as police continued their investigation.

Authorities have not yet said what vehicle struck the pedestrian or whether any charges are pending. More information is forthcoming, police said.
