Bay Shore’s new HopWin’s brewery wins L.I. beer battle

|

The Long Island Craft Classic shattered attendance records Saturday at Heckscher State Park in East Islip, organizers say.

And when the dust settled on the third annual BREW’D competition, one beer stood out as the best.

That beer was brewed right in Bay Shore, at the new HopWin’s Brewery.

Here’s how the contest worked:

Both commercial brewing companies and homebrewers alike were asked to brew a beer using a mystery ingredient, which this year was revealed on June 4 to be mango.

Brewers then had about eight weeks to brew any beer or cider they preferred, as long as it incorporated mango into the recipe. Then the festival attendees voted at the event.

The winners were announced at the end of the day.

In the commercial category, HopWin’s Brewery took home the gold, receiving the most votes for their milkshake IPA called Dat Mango Tho’.

In the non-commercial category, Jennifer and Tim Davis, a husband and wife, won for their Last Mango in Paris, a hard cider with mango and lactose.

Next year’s Long Island Craft Classic and the 4th annual BREW’D competition will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8, at Heckscher State Park in East Islip.
