Before President Donald Trump announced an agreement Friday to temporarily open the government, two days earlier, the William Floyd School District informed residents that struggling furloughed federal workers could apply for the free or reduced meal program.
The district, which had received guidance from the New York State Education Department that furloughed workers could apply, received 13 applications. It approved 11, granting free meals to 20 students and reduced meals to three more for the remainder of the school year and a 30-day carryover into next school year. After that time, families who qualify will need to re-apply.
James Montalto, the school district’s spokesman, said two applications were denied because they exceeded the maximum household income threshold.
Earlier Friday, before Trump’s announcement, the Center Moriches School District sent out a notice about the free or reduced lunch program as well.
Eastport-South Manor Central School District officials said they weren’t aware of the state’s guidance, but would look into it.
Since the agreement to keep the government open only lasts until Feb. 15, it’s possible that there could be another shutdown.
“If that occurs, those who have applied and been approved will not have to worry about their child’s school meals,” Montalto said.
