Hundreds of donors have contributed more than $41,000 to support the family of the 14-year-old Mepham High School freshman fatally struck Thursday morning while riding his e-bike to school in North Bellmore.
Jayden Flores was heading north on Newbridge Road around 7 a.m. when, according to police, he attempted to make a left turn near Bellmore Avenue and was struck by a 2025 Chevrolet SUV. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“Our community is devastated. I would like to help, and so many families in our wonderful community want to do the same,” wrote Mierto Mannino, who organized a GoFundMe effort for Jayden’s family.
“He was such a good boy,” his mother, Tania Salazar, tearfully told News 12 Long Island.
The Bellmore-Merrick School District said it activated its crisis response team at Mepham high School and its five other schools. Counselors, social workers and psychologists will remain available as long as needed.
