Despite multiple “closing” signs posted in the front windows of DII Deals and Discounts in Bellmore, employees say no final decision has been made about the store’s future.
Workers at the popular Jerusalem Avenue shop told Greater Long Island on Thursday night that the signs stem from an ongoing rent dispute with the property’s landlord, who is allegedly seeking more money.
Staffers, who declined to give their names, described the closure notices as a message from management that the business will not continue under those terms.
“The signs are up that say we are leaving in January, so if they are going to play hardball, so are we,” one employee said. “This is the store’s way of saying we won’t pay that rent.”
The Bellmore location opened in June 2000 in the former Rite Aid space and has since become a go-to spot for discounted home goods, seasonal items and everyday essentials.
Brooklyn-based DII operates more than 15 stores across the tristate area, including another Long Island location in Elmont.
Greater Long Island reached out to the property owners but has not heard back.
For now, the Bellmore DII remains open — with no “going out of business” sales — as the rent standoff continues.
