A 27-year-old Bellport man is facing drug-impaired driving charges after police say he struck and killed a pedestrian on Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore before dawn Friday, turning the busy corridor into a fatal crash scene as the morning commute began.
Andrew Holmes Garriques was driving a 2008 Mercedes C350 east on the Sunrise Highway Service Road near the Brentwood Road overpass when at about 5:18 a.m. he hit a male pedestrian who was walking along the roadway, Suffolk Police said.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The police are withholding his identity until his family can be notified of his death.
Garriques was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, and will be held overnight at the Suffolk Police’s Third Precinct. He is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 14 at First District Court in Central Islip.
An adult female passenger in the Mercedes was not injured.
The announcement of the arrest comes after an hours-long investigation at the scene that closed the highway’s eastbound lanes at the height of the morning rush hour. Westbound commuters reported seeing the victim’s body at the scene while, authorities worked to reconstruct what happened.
