The state parks department has a fun way to celebrate the fall season, and one not that many Long Islanders may know about.
Each year, at Belmont Lake State Park, the states runs its Great Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular Sail, where 50 decorated pumpkins are floated on the lake.
Those pumpkins, which are placed on flotation devices, will set sail this Sunday, Oct. 28, at 6:15 p.m.
The first 50 jack-o’-lantern to be received at the park Saturday will set sail.
The jack-o’-lanterns must be the size of soccer ball or basketball, and must be dropped off the day-of, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Belmont Lake State Park Boat Dock, according to the parks department’s special event coordinator, Abigail Scharadin.
In addition to sailing, there will also be free family-fun activities at the park from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Between then, there will be trick or treating, a kid-friendly spooky house, a petting zoo, and children’s games.
For more information about the day, and for weather updates, call NYS Park Department at 631-321-3510.
