For the last 32 years, Tai Wong has owned and operated a Chinese restaurant in Bay Shore called Bo Wah Kitchen.
Now, with the help of his business partner, Simon Chow, the 60-year-old chef has opened an all-new restaurant a few stores down called Savor Eatery.
Savor Eatery, which opened at 631 East Main Street in November, specializes in authentic Asian cuisine — dishes both Chow and Wong enjoyed while they grew up in Hong Kong.
“These are meals that relate back to our childhood,” said Chow, 34, who now lives in Queens. “It is something our moms and our aunts would make after school for us.”
According to the Savor Eatery owners, there’s a big difference between Asian restaurants overseas compared with the one-style concepts people find in most U.S. restaurants.
“Every year I go to Hong Kong and Singapore. There, the restaurants don’t have one type of food,” said Wong pointing to the Italian, Greek, and Japanese restaurants found locally. “They sell everything from Thailand, Indian, Chinese food, and it’s all mixed together.”
The two wanted to bring that traditional Asian-style to Bay Shore.
“Savor Eatery is about the best Asian cuisines that we want to bring to this neighborhood,” said Chow. “There is nothing like this in the area.”
One of the restaurant’s popular dishes is its Hong Kong-style noodle soup, which features stir-fried noodles with beef, a tomato-based sauce, sliced cucumbers and scallions.
Other menu items include chicken sandwiches, Asian salads and rice bowls.
“It tastes good and it’s healthy,” said Wong, who lives in West Islip. “And every season we are going to change the menu.”
