Bohemia woman rescued after falling into 8-foot hole in her backyard, report says

A Bohemia woman is recovering after the ground opened beneath her feet in her own backyard Thursday morning, dropping her eight feet down into what turned out to be an old, forgotten well, according to News 12 Long Island.

Danielle Tammone told News 12 she was walking across her lawn when she suddenly felt the earth start to sink beneath her. In seconds, she was standing in a hole under ground level, surrounded by water, sod, stone and brick.

Worried the walls of the old well could crumble on top of her, she didn’t try to climb out on her own — she screamed instead.

Two neighbors heard her and called 911. Christine Chanowsky told News 12 the opening in the ground was barely a foot wide — just enough to see Tammone’s shoes poking out down below.

Responding police officers grabbed a ladder from a nearby garage and pulled Tammone to safety, neighbors told News 12. Chanowsky said she hugged Tammone the moment she climbed out, relieved she’d made it through unhurt.

Tammone walked away from the ordeal without any injuries, according to News 12.
