The downtown Lindenhurst property housing Breakers Burrito Bar has been listed for sale, but the restaurant’s owners say they haven’t given up on the business — and are asking the community to help them turn things around.
In a statement posted to social media, Breakers acknowledged concerns about its food quality and service, saying the restaurant has struggled despite the success of the parent company’s other locations.
The owners said they recently received an unsolicited offer from an investor interested in purchasing the building while allowing Breakers to remain as a tenant. Although that deal fell through, it prompted them to explore other options, including selling the property.
“Listing the property does not mean we have decided to leave Lindenhurst,” the restaurant said. “A sale could allow us to continue operating Breakers as a tenant under a new property owner and give us some flexibility.”
The owners said they have invested millions of dollars in purchasing and renovating the property, located at 147 S. Wellwood Ave., and hope to keep Breakers operating there.
A call for community feedback
As part of that effort, Breakers is planning a community workshop Tuesday, Oct. 20, inviting residents to share their concerns and suggestions for improving the restaurant.
“We know there have been concerns about the consistency of both service and product quality at Breakers, and we aren’t dismissing them,” the statement said. “We are willing to listen, take the criticism seriously, and make a real attempt to course correct.”
The owners said they want to better understand why the Lindenhurst business has struggled and what changes could help turn it around.
But they also cautioned that community feedback alone won’t be enough.
“We genuinely want to give this another shot, but the workshop cannot just result in good ideas on paper,” the statement said. “We need to see that those changes can create renewed interest and bring people back through the doors.”
Greater Long Island has reached out for additional details on the workshop, including the planned time and if registration is required or not.
From brewery to burrito bar
Breakers debuted in April in the former Great South Bay Brewery space inside a historic downtown Lindenhurst bank building.
As Greater Long Island previously reported, the Davis family behind Great South Bay and their partners transformed the restaurant space into a Southern California-inspired burrito bar, offering burritos, tacos and other street food alongside craft beer and cocktails.
Great South Bay Brewery also operates its flagship brewery and tasting room in North Bay Shore, a taproom at Ronkonkoma’s Station Yards complex, and Magnolias, a cocktail bar and restaurant in downtown Bay Shore.
The company pointed to the success of those three locations in its statement, saying it wants to better understand why Breakers has struggled and what changes might help turn the Lindenhurst business around.
“We’re not asking anyone to support a business that isn’t delivering a good experience,” the statement said. “We’re asking for the opportunity to listen, improve, and earn that support back.”
