A tense exchange between two Brentwood High School students Tuesday landed a mother in handcuffs — and one of the teens in the hospital.
Suffolk County Police said a 14-year-old girl was leaving the school about 11 a.m. when she and a 15-year-old schoolmate began exchanging words. During the argument, the elder teen’s mother, Toni Monroe, hit the younger girl repeatedly with a metal water bottle, police said.
A security guard intervened and broke up the altercation. Monroe, 35, was arrested in the school parking lot a short time later, police said.
The 14-year-old was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Monroe was charged with second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. She was being held at the police department’s Fourth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Central Islip.
