Brookhaven approves two new Popeyes, for Coram and Lake Ronkonkoma

Town officials have unanimously approved plans for two new Popeyes Louisiana Chicken restaurants — on Middle Country Road in Coram and on Portion Road in Lake Ronkonkoma.

Suffolk County already counts 10 existing locations of the fast food chain with the catchy “Love that chicken from Popeyes” jingle.

A 2,100-square-foot Popeyes drive-through will go up at the northwest corner of Middle Country and Mount Sinai-Coram roads in Coram. It’s been in the works for five years, as developers hammered out the details with Brookhaven Town and the Coram Civic Association to align the building’s design with the historical Davis House across the street.

“It’s not the typical Popeyes restaurant,” Keith Archer, an attorney for the developers, told town board members during the board’s most recent meeting on June 27. “It was really developed in consultation with the community … It’s more geared toward the community and the surrounding area.”

Councilwoman Jane Bonner agreed and expressed gratitude for the design concessions made by the developers.

“I appreciate that the applicant took into consideration the Davis House and school house that are right on the same corner,” she said, “so that (the designs) blend together. I know there’s large-scale community support and we do have a letter of support from local civic association.”

The Coram location will have seating for 39 customers.

The new Lake Ronkonkoma Popeyes will fill a vacant parcel at 359 Portion Road. The 3,000-square-foot eatery will have seating for 36 customers.

A drive-through window will be located on the western side of the new take-out restaurant, which will be adjacent to an IHOP restaurant. Across the street is a Taco Bell, and just up the road is Regal Cinemas.

Councilman John Manzella noted that the developers had made aesthetic changes to the design of the Popeyes to accommodate concerns from the community.

“It’s nice to see the developer working with the community … that they’re willing to make the changes, and put in the extra effort to make it a little more prettier, and more aesthetic for the community,” he said during the board meeting.

Popeyes has existing restaurants in Patchogue, Shirley, Central Islip, Riverhead, Centereach, Deer Park, Bay Shore and Brentwood. Lindenhurst has two Popeyes locations.
