The Lakeview Cemetery Restoration Committee has been hard at work restoring Patchogue’s historic cemetery to its former glory.
Committee members and other volunteers have been clearing the last of the overgrowth, running electric to light monuments, and recently repaired and replaced several headstones, including stones for 10 Civil War veterans.
That last part came with the help of the Veterans Administration.
The West Main Street entrance, with its archway, brick-and-iron fencing and landscaping, has beautified that part of the cemetery.
Now the committee is turning its eyes toward cleaning up the Waverly Avenue side. Lakeview is otherwise bordered by the Patchogue Family YMCA property to the east.

To kick things off, donations are being sought to install a lighted flagpole near Waverly.
The project is expected to cost $2,500.
“We are grateful for the financial support of private donors and grants from Suffolk County,” reads a committee announcement issued this week. “The Brookhaven Town parks department and our volunteers have done a great job to maintain the property and Village of Patchogue helps with trash removal and electricity.
“We’d like to continue this work with fencing, walkways and more lighting, but first things first; we need a flagpole, especially since so many veterans are interred there.”
The goal is to raise and light the flag on Flag Day, June 14.
