Islip Town officials are asking residents to remove their empty garbage cans from the morning’s sanitation collections.
Empty cans which may have blown into the streets are a hazard to plows, and may ultimately become damaged in the process.

The NWS’s blizzard warning is now forecasting 12 to 16 inches over Long Island.
Update (Wednesday, 6: p.m.):
The National Weather Service is issuing a blizzard warning as a powerful storm gets set to wallop Long Island.
The Weather Service is predicting 10 to 14 inches of snow over Long Island, with some local accumulations reaching even higher. The blizzard warning will be in effect from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, and indicates severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring.
All Bay Shore, Islip and East Islip schools are closed Thursday, Feb. 9, and all district programs and services are cancelled.
Update (Wednesday, 1:30 p.m.):
The Town of Islip has announced sanitation carters will begin their routes one-hour earlier on Thursday, Feb. 9, in anticipation of Thursday’s storm.

Despite Wednesday’s balmy temperatures, the National Weather Service reminds a winter storm warning will be in effect for all of Long Island, starting at midnight and running to 6 p.m. on Thursday.
Six to 10 inches of accumulation is expected, with low visibility and hazardous travel conditions on Thursday.
Wind gusts are expected to reach 30 to 35 mph.
