Column: Launching plans for Patchogue-Medford 2.0

Hynes

Over the past 15 months I have been fortunate enough to meet with hundreds of stakeholders within our school community. As I met with individuals, groups and community organizations, one thing resonated with me after each meeting; are we doing everything we can to ensure our children are successful?

I believe the best intentions are there but the reality is, all organizations need a clear and intentional plan to do so.

As of today, we don’t.

The exciting news is the Patchogue-Medford School District is embarking on a new initiative this year. For the first time, our school district will craft a strategic plan. This plan, Patchogue-Medford 2.0: The Road to Success, will be a collaborative venture that will focus on our school community designing and implementing a five-year plan for our school district.

Our roadmap will take a year to design and several years to implement. The development of the Road to Success will require time and effort from all stakeholders.

The Road to Success will focus on nurturing the talents of all students.

The foundation for the The Road to Success lies within the five pillars: Comprehensive and Progressive Programs, Promoting and Advancing Human Capital, Review Innovative Structural Configurations, and Positive Culture and Identity.

Another important component of the plan will rely on developing a Vision Statement, Mission Statement and a Patchogue-Medford Graduate Profile.

Each pillar will be represented by a committee. Each committee will consist of a school board member, district office personnel, building administrator, educators, and community members. All committees will be finalized by the end of September.

The success of this important mission will depend on the following:

  1. Crystal clear outcomes for each pillar

2. We must raise the standards

3. Create an action plan that everyone can understand

4. Track and monitor progress

5. Hold myself and others accountable

The Road to Success will be effective if everyone understands the roles they play in designing our future. The Patchogue-Medford School district, parents, students, school staff and community all have an important role in making sure our five-year plan moves forward successfully.

If you are interested in joining one of our committees, please go to the Patchogue-Medford School District website at  to apply. We also have a presentation that outlines our Road to Success in greater detail.

I encourage you to watch the presentation and call or email me with any questions or concerns you may have.

As a colleague of mine once said, “The first step to develop and articulate an inspiring dream is to share that dream with others.”

I believe this plan is the first step our school district needs to move toward greatness.

My dream is for all our children to have multiple opportunities to succeed. This plan will ensure they do.

Michael Hynes is the Patchogue-Medford School District superintendent.
