Community helping Bayport family impacted by death of veteran NYPD lieutenant

The local community is stepping up to support the family of a former NYPD lieutenant from Bayport who was hospitalized Christmas morning and died this week.

Thomas Aurandt, on the city police force for two decades until his retirement in 2016, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 16, leaving behind his wife Deborah and their children, Julia and Charles, who both attend college.

Friends have started a GoFundMe for the family in hopes of easing the financial burden of losing Aurandt, the “primary breadwinner of the family.”

“He was a family man and a loving soul who always went above and beyond to provide for his family and others,” reads the GoFundMe page organized by Melissa DiTomasso. “Due to Thomas being the primary breadwinner of the family, Deborah, Julia and Charles now face financial worries that I hope we can help them with.”

Organizers of the GoFundMe page for the Aurandts seek “any small donation to help carry the burden of college tuition and funeral costs.” Julia and her younger brother Charles are both student-athletes.

Memorial visitation services for Thomas Aurandt are Thursday, Jan. 20, from 6-8 p.m. at Raynor & D’Andrea Funeral Home, located at 683 Montauk Highway in Bayport. Thomas Aurandt is also survived by his sister Sandra Marro and his mother Aina Aurandt.
