The community is rallying around a Hicksville family after a fire destroyed the longtime House of Donuts earlier this week.
The shop, which has been a neighborhood staple since 1971, suffered severe fire and water damage after flames broke out in a neighboring business on Oct. 8.
The four-alarm blaze began just after midnight inside a two-story commercial building on Marie Street, according to reports. About 200 firefighters from seven departments across Nassau County responded to help the Hicksville Fire Department battle the flames. One firefighter suffered minor injuries, officials said.

A GoFundMe launched to support owners Nick and Maria Kefalas has already raised nearly $30,000 from almost 400 donors as of Friday.

The fundraising page shares how Nick came to the U.S. in 1977 and began working at the donut shop when he was just 17. Through decades of dedication, he eventually became the owner — still waking before dawn each day to make fresh donuts alongside his son.
Maria, known by regulars as the heart of the shop, was always the first to greet customers with a smile, pour their coffee, and ask about their families.

“The family is heartbroken, but determined to rebuild so they can continue serving the community that has supported them for over five decades,” the GoFundMe reads.
