A Coram woman faces a drunk driving charge early after her vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic Sunday morning and collided with a state snowplow in Middle Island, police said.
Erika Jackson, 25, was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu west on Middle Country Road about 5:20 a.m. when the sedan crossed into the eastbound lane near 140 Middle Country Road and struck a New York State Department of Transportation snowplow.
Jackson suffered serious injuries and was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment. She was charged with driving while intoxicated and will be arraigned at a later date, police said.
The snowplow driver, Victor Rivera, 42, of Mastic Beach, was brought to NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk in Patchogue for treatment of minor injuries. The Malibu was impounded for a safety check, and the snowplow was inspected at the scene by Motor Carrier Safety Section officers.
Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad at 631.854.8652. A criminal charge is an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
