Suffolk County Police detectives are seeking the public’s help in their investigation of a car wreck that killed a tow truck operator on the shoulder of Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore.
Richard Rodriguez, 32, of Freeport was working to load a disabled 2007 Chevrolet Suburban onto his tow truck, a a 2020 Dodge Ram, about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday when he was struck by a passing 2023 Kia Forte.
The crash — on the westbound shoulder of Sunrise Highway, just west of Brentwood Road — caused the man behind the wheel of the Kia, Anthony Licalzi, 38, of Massapequa, to lose control, cross multiple lanes of traffic and smash into the center median.
Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene; Licalzi was not injured.
Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Third Squad are asking anyone who may have seen the incident to come forward. Witnesses can provide information by calling 631.854.8352.
The three vehicles involved in the crash have been impounded for safety checks.
