The repaving of a badly damaged stretch of Route 112 that began Aug. 1 in Patchogue has been “temporarily and unavoidably suspended,” according to the Department of Transportation.
The stoppage is “due to unanticipated conditions in the field, specifically, severely damaged drainage basins,” said a DOT spokesperson, Eileen Peters.
“NYSDOT is reviewing the situation to determine the most effective and efficient method of making needed repairs and moving the project forward,” she said.
Assemblyman Dean Murray of East Patchogue addressed the news on his Facebook page.
“While I am disappointed in the delay, I am glad the problem was identified before they started tearing up the road,” he wrote. “Had that happened, we could have been faced with the road being closed for quite some time … I feel that it’s much more important to get it done safely and get it done right.”
No timeline had been given on how long the original work was supposed to last.
Peters said the DOT might have more information next week on the unforeseen issue.
