In a reversal of a troubling trend in Suffolk County, it was not just the electronic bike rider but also the driver of a vehicle who suffered serious injuries in a crash Sunday in Huntington Station, police said.
Frerlin Sarceno Gudiel, 24, of Huntington Station was operating an e-bike northbound on Depot Road about 6:30 p.m. when he allegedly ran a red light at Pulaski Road and crashed broadside into a westbound 2019 Subaru SUV.
The driver of the Subaru, an 81-year-old woman, is being treated at Huntington Hospital for serious injuries. Authorities withheld her name pending notification of her family.
Sarceno Gudiel also suffered serious injuires and was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore. He has since been charged with Driving While Intoxicated: Previous Conviction of Designated Offense Within 10 Years, and Operating a Bicycle with Electronic Assist While Intoxicated.
The e-bike rider will arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
This year, police have increasingly reported crashes involving e-bikes and motor vehicles — with e-bike riders typically bearing the brunt of injuries.
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks, and the investigation is ongoing.
Investigators asked for anyone with information about the crash to contact Suffolk County Police’s Second Squad at 631.854.8252.
