Photographer and drone videographer Joanna Steidle spotted more than a dozen sandbar sharks last weekend moving through shallow water just off Montauk Point — and caught the moment on camera.
“Just 10–50ft off the coast of Montauk, NY I came across over 20 sandbar sharks in 1–3ft of water,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “I was able to capture 13 in one frame, a sight I never thought I would witness in New York!”
The drone footage, taken Saturday near the Montauk Point Lighthouse, shows the sharks gliding through clear, shallow surf. Steidle noted that while the area is known for surfcasting and is near a popular surfing spot, it’s not a designated swimming area.
