E-bike rider killed in early morning Medford crash

|

A 35-year-old Queens man riding an e-bike was killed in a collision with a pickup truck early Friday in Medford, Suffolk police said.

Gilberto Guilbe of Far Rockaway was heading east on Woodside Avenue about 6:17 a.m. when his e-bike struck a northbound 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck at Route 112, authorities said.

Guilbe was taken to NYU Langone Hospital – Suffolk in Patchogue, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the truck, Douglas Melgarguillen, 39, of Bay Shore, was not injured.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks, police said. Detectives ask anyone with information on the crash to contact the Fifth Squad at 631.854.8552.

Thursday’s tragedy adds to a troubling pattern of e-bike crashes in Suffolk County. In recent months, riders have been killed or seriously injured in accidents in Bay Shore, Coram and Shirley, highlighting ongoing safety concerns of e-bikes on increasingly busy local roads.
