East Islip boy gets ultimate garbage truck birthday surprise

|

Most kids turning 4 might dream of a birthday involving Spider-Man, the Hulk or maybe some PAW Patrol characters.

Not East Islip’s Kieran Lowe.

For Kieran, nothing could top a visit from his favorite garbage truck.

And Monday morning, he got his wish.

The Town of Islip and a local sanitation crew helped celebrate Kieran’s fourth birthday with a special visit outside his family’s home, complete with gifts and a model garbage truck.

The surprise was months in the making, after Kieran’s mother, Danielle Lowe, reached out to the town with an unusual birthday request.

Kieran, she explained, is absolutely fascinated by garbage trucks โ€” particularly the one that makes its weekly rounds through his neighborhood.

“On garbage days, we have to eat breakfast on the front porch so that we don’t miss the truck!” she wrote in her request to the town.

And that’s exactly where town officials found him Monday morning.

“We arrived at Kieran’s house before the sun had even come up, and there he was, outside with his family, waffle in hand, enjoying his breakfast while waiting for the garbage truck to arrive,” said Gina Cacoperdo, commissioner of Islip’s Department of Environmental Control.

“His mom and dad told us that this is something he often does because he loves watching the trucks go by.”

There’s one sanitation worker in particular who has become something of a celebrity in the Lowe household.

The worker, Jose Pineda, who rides on the back of the truck always makes a point of greeting Kieran and pointing to him whenever the crew passes his home.

The simple gesture, Danielle explained, makes her son’s entire day.

Kieran’s enthusiasm doesn’t end when the truck disappears down the street.

According to his mother, he plays “garbage truck” nearly every day, pretending to ride on the back of shopping carts as though he’s part of the sanitation crew.

He’s even planning to dress as a sanitation worker for Halloween.

And when people ask what he wants to be when he grows up, Kieran already has his answer: a garbage man.

A birthday wish comes true

In her message to the town, Danielle acknowledged that arranging a special visit might not be possible.

“Completely understand if a visit is not possible as it is such a huge ask,” she wrote. “I am just so appreciative of the fact that you’re even looking into it.”

But the town and its sanitation contractor, Jody Enterprises, helped make it happen.

On Monday morning, the crew arrived to celebrate with Kieran and his family, bringing along gifts that included shirts and a model of the garbage truck he loves so much.

For Cacoperdo, who helped organize the surprise, the celebration was about more than making one little boy’s birthday wish come true.

“Our sanitation workers work so hard in all kinds of weather, yet they still take the time to wave, smile, and make a little boy’s morning extra special,” she said. “It’s a simple gesture, but one that means so much.”

And for the commissioner, it was quite a way to kick off the workweek.

“What a beautiful way to start the week!” she said.

“It’s a wonderful reminder that kindness doesn’t cost a thing, but it can make someone’s day.”
