East Islip High School sends four student photographers to Suffolk art competition

|

East Islip High School photography students Naomy Mukai, Luciana Ponciolo, Kelly Waldron and Kaylee Wilko participated in the annual High School Art Competition at Suffolk County Community College.

Their work was displayed in the Sagtikos Art Gallery in the college’s Sagtikos Arts and Sciences Center last month. An opening ceremony was attended by students; the young photographers’ family members; and their teachers, Amarilis Singh and Heather Toomey.

More than 100 students from 16 schools submitted works for the competition.

“Being at my first showcase, seeing all the artwork and touring Suffolk’s new art center was a great overall experience for me,” Waldron said.

Mukai said it was the first opportunity to display his work publicly.

“It was an honor to be chosen for this opportunity by my art teachers. Being able to see the new facilities in person, especially the darkroom with Mrs. Singh and Mrs. Toomey, was an amazing experience.”

Toomey expressed how proud she is of her students.

“And [I] am so excited we are finally able to celebrate and hang physical artworks in a professional gallery space,” she said. “Being able to see artwork in person is an experience we have all missed.”
