East Islip students awarded for their charitable works

Two East Islip High School students were recognized for their time helping others in the community.

Senior Heather McNamara and freshman Johnathan Yankus, both from Islip Terrace, earned awards at the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, which was held on Thursday, March 14. The program, conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), is one of the country’s largest youth recognition events based exclusively on volunteer community service, according to Prudential spokespeople.

Heather was presented with an engraved bronze medallion to recognize her selection as a Distinguished Finalist for New York, while Johnathan received the President’s Volunteer Service Award, granted by the Spirit of Community program.

Heather’s charitable work includes raising around $45,000 for several charities, including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Make-A-Wish Foundation. Johnathan’s volunteerism comprises of helping the Riverhead Foundation by leading clean-ups, educating the public on conservation and raising funds to help marine mammals.
