East Islip native and now professional hockey player Robert Mastrosimone can’t get enough of the red.

The former Redman was selected on Day 2 of the 2019 NHL Draft by the Detriot Red Wings at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada.

The 18-year-old forward immediately took to social media to express his feelings on the selection.

“Couldn’t be more excited to be a part of such an amazing organization,” said Mastrosimone on Instagram.  “Also, thank you to all my family and friends for the unreal amount of support they give me.”

Mastrosimone, who was picked at 54th overall, has played with the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League the last two years. This season, the left winger was an alternate captain; he scored 31 goals with 29 assists.

Prior to the draft, the 5-foot-10, 159-pounder committed to play at Boston University for the 2019-20 season. According to Chicago Tribune, NHL teams retain the rights to players until 30 days after the player leaves college.

In addition to Mastrosimone, there were two other Long Islanders who were picked in this year’s draft. Franklin Square’s Shane Pinto (center) was selected No. 32 overall by the Ottawa Senators, and Laurel Hollow native Marshall Warren, a defenseman, was chosen at No. 166 by the Minnesota Wild.
