Eastport lands itself an Argentinian barbecue eatery

|

The owners of a popular food truck El Che Argentinian BBQ have set up a more permanent spot in Eastport to serve their signature grub.

Mastic couple Fabian Diessler and Stella Maris Mayorga this month opened a brick-and-mortar El Che Deli and Grocery to serve the truck’s signature dishes. The truck — in operation since 2017 — had became a go-to staple for many folks in the Moriches area, serving up freshly flamed steak, chicken and pork dishes.

Diessler said he has been a professional chef for a decade, working in restaurants in Miami and on Long Island. He and his wife opened the Che Argentinian Steak House in Riverhead in 2020. Last summer, they left the restaurant to their partner and focused on their food truck business.

Among the most popular menu choices are the flap steak sandwich, short ribs, shrimp fettuccini, chicken milanesa, and pork tenderloins. There are also empanadas and various soups, salads and sides.

Diners not in a rush can sit at the tables inside the eatery and enjoy their meal hot and fresh on the spot, or they can take it to go. After a decade in the business, Diessler knows what makes good Argentinian BBQ.

It’s essentially two things, “salt, and my hands,” he said.

Beyond the barbecue delights, the deli offers sandwiches, chips, ice cream and other snacks.

The shop also sells fresh baked sweets, such as croissants and bolas de fraile, which are akin to a doughnut. The alfajores de maicena, soft sandwich cookies filled with dulce de leche and rolled in coconut, draw customers’ eyes from the case atop the front counter.

Hours and location

El Che Deli and Grocery is located at 491 Montauk Highway in Eastport. It is open every day, from noon- 9 p.m.
