Dollar General to replace shuttered Rite Aid in Miller Place Square

The cardboard sign taped to the glass front door reads “Store not open.” But the temporary vinyl Dollar General sign above it — and the stocked shelves inside — tell a different story.

A new Dollar General is preparing to open in Miller Place Square, quietly moving into the space left behind by the Rite Aid that closed in late 2023.

This weekend, lights were on inside the store, merchandise was already lining the shelves, and the interior had been broken up into the typical aisle layout found in Dollar General stores across the country. While there’s no official opening date posted, there are signs pointing toward an imminent launch.

The site had sat vacant since the Miller Place Rite Aid closed as part of the pharmacy chain’s ongoing bankruptcy proceedings. As Greater Long Island previously reported, at least 15 Long Island Rite Aid locations were slated to shut down beginning in 2023 — and the company is in the process of closing all of its stores in New York.

Dollar Tree a stone’s throw away

Greater Long Island has reached out to Dollar General for information about when the store will officially begin operations.

Once open, the Miller Place Dollar General will become the nearest location for residents. The next closest sits roughly 2.5 miles away in Rocky Point.

Meanwhile, a Dollar Tree remains in business just across the parking lot in the adjacent North Country Plaza.

Steven Bezmen and Dennis Gandley of Douglas Elliman Commercial Division, along with Johnathan Sussman of JRS Realty Advisors LLC, represented Dollar General and Devang Patel of Douglas Elliman Commercial Division represented the landlord in brokering the lease with Dollar General.

The new Dollar General is part of a wave of new businesses in the two shopping centers on the north side of Route 25A in the western section of Miller Place. Daisy’s Nashville Lounge opened in North Country Plaza in 2024, as well as Chili Baby Thai in Miller Place Square.

In the coming months, a Trader Joe’s and Brinkmann’s True Value Hardware are expected to open across the street (Route 25A) on either side of the existing Walgreens.
