Farmingdale High School has created a permanent Wall of Valor honoring graduates who served in the United States Armed Forces.
The district unveiled the new tribute during an inaugural Wall of Valor ceremony on May 27, recognizing a diverse group of veteran alumni whose service spans multiple generations.
School leaders said the wall was created because the district’s existing Wall of Fame could not fully capture the sacrifices and contributions of military veterans.
“The Wall of Valor was established to honor veterans who secured the freedoms we enjoy today,” Superintendent Paul Defendini said during the ceremony. “Our veterans have stories that need to be told, and we have a responsibility to provide the audience.”
The ceremony featured a presentation of colors, a service song medley performed by the Daler Brass band and the induction of the wall’s first honorees.
Guest speaker Lt. Col. Richard Vargas, a Farmingdale graduate, reflected on the role the district played in shaping his life and military career.
“This Wall of Valor is a symbol for future generations of students, staff and faculty to reflect on selfless service,” Vargas said. “For me and so many Dalers, my basic training started right here.”
Principal Jed Herman said the memorial is designed to inspire future students as they pass through the school’s halls.
“Every student who walks the halls and passes that wall will see examples of courage, leadership and service,” Herman said. “They will be reminded that greatness is attainable, that character matters, and that one person truly can make a difference in the lives of many.”
The ceremony concluded with a moment of silence and a performance by the Daler Brass.
District officials said they are continuing to accept nominations for future Wall of Valor inductees. Those interested in nominating a Farmingdale graduate who served in the military may contact Farmingdale High School’s main office at 516-434-5210. More photos below.
