South Hempstead woman slashed victim’s finger, then pepper-sprayed cop during arrest, police say

A South Hempstead woman faces multiple charges after police say she attacked a 27-year-old woman with a broken glass bottle, then sprayed an officer with an unknown chemical and kicked another cop as they tried to arrest her.

Nassau Police said officers responded to a disturbance call at a home on Willis Street in South Hempstead about 4 a.m. Sunday. There, they found Carolynne Alvarez, 27, who lives in the home, in a physical altercation with a 27-year-old woman.

Police said Alvarez tried to strike the victim with a broken glass bottle, cutting her finger and causing minor pain and a laceration.

As officers moved toward Alvarez to arrest her, authorities said, she sprayed an unknown chemical substance into an officer’s face, causing eye and facial irritation. She continued to resist, remaining violent and combative, and kicked a second officer in the knee while being walked to an ambulance, police said.

Both officers and Alvarez were taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Alvarez is charged with two counts of second-degree assault on a police officer, second-degree assault, third-degree menacing, second-degree obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest.

She pleaded not guilty to the charges on Monday at Nassau First District Court in Hempstead.
