When Justin Seltzer was a kid vacationing on Fire Island, he had a simple dream: run a little hot dog stand by the beach.
Fast forward a few decades, and he’s living that dream — and then some.
Seltzer, who opened the upscale American bar The Last Resort in Ocean Beach this May, has now expanded to a second concept right next door: The Corner Spot.
“It was something we wanted to have as an option for families,” he said.
How it happened
Seltzer and his wife Shannon have been visiting Fire Island for over 30 years.
Last year, they made the move full time and partnered with longtime friend Jon Randazzo to open The Last Resort at 312 Bay Walk.
But just a few weeks after opening the restaurant, another opportunity came knocking — literally next door.
The former Corner Bistro space, located at 310 Bay Walk, had only lasted one summer. So the team gave it a new name, a fresh paint job, and a counter for people to sit at. Just like that, The Corner Spot was born.
“When I was younger, I just wanted a hot dog stand on the beach,” Seltzer said. “This is a little more than that — but it’s super simple.”
If you go
The Corner Spot is all about quick bites and grab-and-go fun.
On the menu: hand-rolled smash burgers stacked with onions, cheese, pickles and “corner sauce,” crispy chicken, hot dogs, fries, and drinks to wash it all down.
“We opened up the kitchen so you can watch the food being made,” Seltzer said.
In addition to the eats, there’s beer, canned cocktails, hard seltzers, and frozen slushies — which can be poured over a little alcohol if you’re in the mood.
“It’s a great place for families,” he said. “Come try the burger and go from there, you won’t be disappointed.”
