Support provided by Northwell’s Mather Hospital, which delivers the five-star difference in exceptional care and is ranked by Medicare in the top 5% of hospitals nationwide for overall clinical performance and patient experience.
That didn’t take long.
Port Jefferson’s girls varsity golf team — playing its inaugural season — recorded its first win in its very first match, earlier this month.
The history-in-the-making moment came in a League II contest against Connetquot. The Royals won 7.5-1.5.
Earl L. Vandermeulen High School physics teacher — as well as the girls varsity volleyball and basketball coach — Charles Hafner helped to spearhead the creation of the program.
“Mr. Hafner held multiple student interest meetings, coordinated with the Port Jefferson Country Club and designed uniforms for our girls golf team,” Port Jefferson schools Athletic Director Adam Sherrard said. “With his experience in the sport of golf and coaching female sports in our district, he was the ideal candidate to coach the new team.”
In its first win, Port Jeff (1-4) received significant contributions from Gwen Connell, Ava Cooper, Maddy Matvya, Julia Perrotta, Ava Reilly and Tabitha Schully.
Given the interest in the team and its early success, Sherrard said the district is now looking to add a junior varsity squad.
“I look forward to the continued growth of the program and anticipate a junior varsity girls golf team in the future, which will provide more opportunity for our students to compete against other schools,” he said.
