The Long Island Laser is grabbing his passport and heading to Canada.
Former Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan has signed a contract with the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders, the team announced.
Following his record-breaking season at Notre Dame in 2021, Coan signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2022. He attended camp with the Colts before starting for the XFL’s San Antonio Brahmas last spring.
Coan, who set all kinds of Long Island records while playing at Sayville from 2013-2016, threw for 1,471 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie in the pros, as San Antonio finished 3-7 and narrowly missed the playoffs.
Saskatchewan was 6-12 during the fall season, finishing in fourth place in the CFL’s West Division. The last time the team won the Grey Cup and the CFL championship was in 2013.
Training camp for the 2024 CFL season kicks off in May.
Coan is the 15th Notre Dame alumnus to sign a contract with Saskatchewan. Former Notre Dame quarterbacks Tom Clements, Tony Rice and Frank Tripucka all played for the Roughriders. In his only season with the Fighting Irish in 2021, Coan led the team to an 11-2 record.

In Notre Dame’s 37-35 Fiesta Bowl loss to Oklahoma State on New Year’s Day, Coan set Fiesta Bowl records for passing yards with 509 and passing touchdowns with five.

In addition to his time in the XFL and a pre-season camp with the Colts, Coan has had several tryouts with other NFL teams over the last two years.
Before his one season at Notre Dame as a graduate student, Coan played at Wisconsin for three years and earned a bachelor’s degree. With Sayville in 2016, Coan was the unanimous winner of the Hansen Award, given to Suffolk County’s best football player.
