Hibachi Omakase, known locally as backyard hibachi, began right here on Long Island in the summer of 2020.
Since then, the company has expanded up and down the East Coast, and now offers private private hibachi parties in 16 states and Washington D.C.
Head Chef Jay Lee, the company’s New York representative, believes the concept, which was born strictly out of the pandemic, is only going to grow in popularity. That’s because it’s simple, he says.
And, it’s a lot of fun.

“It’s not just about the food,” Lee said. “People are hosting parties at their own house and they want to have a great time. That was the concept — we can bring hibachi and entertainment to their house. And after we leave they can spend time with their family, drink, and do their next activities.”
The idea for Hibachi Omakase, he explained, evolved from people booking sushi chefs for private events.
“That was popular and nice, but it’s just food, no party,” he said.
In other words, no sushi chef ever blasted saki from a Super Soaker into guests’ mouths.
This is how you make memories.
The chefs from Hibachi Omakase can set up on patios, porches, or lawns. And if you happen to be booking in New York or New Jersey, they can even bring a ventilation system and grill inside during the cooler months.
“It’s such a different experience than at the restaurant, too,” Lee said. “It’s more comfortable and more entertaining. The guests get to interact more with the chef and be more involved, whereas at the restaurant, you pretty much just watch. That’s why after the pandemic, it wasn’t a challenge for us because it was such a different experience.
“This isn’t just dinner,” he said. “It’s dinner and a show.”
