Funeral arrangements were announced on Wednesday for Darrell Sumpter, a longtime assistant coach with the William Floyd boys’ varsity basketball team, who died in a car wreck Friday in Shirley.
Visiting hours for Sumpter, 51, will be held Friday, Dec. 20, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 21, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at Robertaccio Funeral Home, located at 495 Main St. in Center Moriches.
A private crematory service for relatives will take place on Monday, Dec. 23.
Sumpter’s daughter, Dejiah “Dej” Sumpter, shared her gratitude for the outpouring of support in a heartfelt Facebook post.
“Due to the outpour of support and clear popularity/love my dad had, we felt we needed to extend the viewing a day longer to ensure that everyone that loved him gets an opportunity to pay respects,” she said. “Thank you all for your support, generosity, kindness and just overall wrapping us with love.”
The highway accident that claimed Sumpter’s life occurred about 1.5 miles east of Horseblock Road, where police say his 2002 Cadillac collided with a 2021 Ford utility truck, causing both vehicles to leave the roadway and overturn. Sumpter’s wife, Susan, 48, and the truck driver, Jason Troccoli, 52, of Lake Ronkonkoma, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Sumpter had been an assistant varsity coach at William Floyd High School since 2015 and was a longtime volunteer and supporter of youth sports in the community. His transformational impact on the community and the basketball program has been widely recognized and remembered.
