A fundraising campaign established Tuesday night for the family of a 21-year-old Bohemia college football player who died this week has quickly drawn an outpouring of support.
More than $4,000 has been raised in less than 24 hours for the family of Joseph Boutros, the former Connetquot High School football player and sophomore offensive lineman at Salve Regina University who died Monday from carbon monoxide poisoning in Newport, Rhode Island.
The Bohemia man was found unconscious Monday evening inside his snow-covered vehicle during the city’s historic blizzard, the Newport Police Department said in a statement. He had been charging his phone in the car because the power had gone out inside his dorm, friends and police said.
The GoFundMe fundraiser was established by Ovadia Choueka to support Boutros’ mother, Annemarie Tocco, a nurse described on the page as someone who has long cared for others in the community.
Heartbreaking cicumstances
“Annemarie, a dedicated nurse who has cared for so many in our community, is now facing an unimaginable loss,” states the GoFundMe page, which noted that Boutros’ dorm lost power during the blizzard.
“This heartbreaking event has left Annemarie and her family in deep shock and grief,” the page continues.
Organizers said the funds will help cover funeral expenses and ease the unexpected financial burden on the family as they navigate their loss.
“The sudden loss of Joseph has brought unexpected expenses, and we hope to ease some of the financial burden by helping with funeral costs and providing support as Annemarie grieves,” the campaign states. “Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference and show Annemarie that she is not alone.”
