On Jan. 10, 1972, a less than 1-year-old barge split in half after discharging its cargo of oil and gasoline. The 584-foot-long Tank Barge I.O.S. 3301 sunk to the bottom of the harbor. The National Transportation Safety Board determined the “incapability of steel” caused the accident.
