Great Kids: Spotlight on a Prom King

Louis Lourenco, Bay Shore, N.Y.Bay Shore High School’s most recent prom king, Louie Lourenco, didn’t campaign for a crown.

But he sure is happy everyone voted for him.

“I thought to myself, ‘Wow, everyone likes me!’” he said.

The 18-year-old couldn’t contain his excitement after finding out; he told everyone he knew. But after the initial burst, he decided to remain humble — and so he’s slowed the bragging a bit.  (At least, until his kids are his age, he said, then he’ll start back up again.)

Louie imagines it was his treatment of others over his high school career that led to to being elected prom king.

Bay Shore is a diverse district, which grants the kids opportunities to be friends with people from different backgrounds.

And Louie treats everyone like an individual.

“I really don’t care what someone looks like or where they’re from,” he said. “I like people for who they are and I really just care about that person. That’s all.”

Louie ran track and devoted much of his free time with Interact, which is a program that helps high schoolers fulfill community needs.

He spent time working with elementary-aged kids with special needs, which he really enjoyed. The YMCA counselor enjoys working with younger kids, even if it means hard work. But he’s no stranger to hard work. He excelled in a BOCES  program this year and received an advanced regents diploma in June.

He also helped to rake leaves at The Sagtikos Manor and even helped paint a mural.  Although he doesn’t consider himself an artist exactly, he does like to pencil-draw comic book characters.

“I’m just so thankful to the parents of the seniors that voted for him.” said Lisa Lourenco, Louie’s mom. ” Everyone’s raising such great kids in this town. I’m so thankful that he went to Bay Shore. All the kids here really love each other and support each other — just the way that they are.”
