Greenport’s storied Silver Sands Motel reopens June 30 after renovations

|

Pack up the kids and the station wagon because the road trip-era Silver Sands Motel is reopening June 30 after an extensive facelift, the Greenport motel owners have announced.

The iconic motel was sold in 2022 after a years-long legal battle.

“Over the past year, the storied property underwent a thoughtful and carefully executed rejuvenation, geared toward rekindling one’s senses through an immersion in simple beauty, and creating unique, cohesive, and approachable hospitality experiences,” reads the announcement.

The bay front motel first opened in 1957.

According to the Silver Sands website, the facelift at the 20-room motel, whose property spans 30 acres, took inspiration from its origin story.

“It recognizes and celebrates that era’s characteristic design and the way it sought to meet the needs of its time. As stewards of the Silver Sands name and spirit, we seek to create a space that recalls the treasured ideals of the 1950s family and traveler while also (re)establishing it as the jewel of the North Fork community today.”

The motel’s beloved neon sign (pictured) has also been beautifully restored and lit by American Neon Sign Company of Bay Shore.

Co-owner Alex Perros told The Suffolk Times in April that interior work on some cottages and bungalows will progress through the summer, after which those units will become available for guests —though, he stressed, none of that work will interfere with the motel experience.

The Suffolk Times also reported that Perros and his partner, chef Ryan Hardy of Delicious Hospitality Group in New York City, “are working on renovating the former snack bar on the motel’s southwest corner and opening it up as a diner sometime this year.”
