Gun found on William Floyd HS student just before dismissal

|

A handgun was discovered Friday afternoon on a William Floyd High School student just before classes were dismissed for the day, school district officials said.

Minutes before the day’s final bell rang, the student was brought to an administrator’s office on suspicion of vaping. During a search of the student with a metal detection wand, the weapon was found, the district said in a statement.

School authorities immediately confiscated the handgun and notified police. Law enforcement is now handling the ongoing investigation, according to the school district.

“The student will be dealt with through the criminal justice system,” the district said in its statement. “In addition to any criminal charges, the student will also be subject to severe consequences according to the school district code of conduct.”

The district has not released further details about the student’s identity or the specific type of handgun involved in the incident.

Commenters on a Facebook post by the district informating the public about the incident were incensed that the student may have been in possession of the gun the entire school day.

“Prior to dismissal, meaning the student had the gun all day?” asked Stephanie Hall-DuBois. “I’m sorry but another dime shouldn’t be spent in that building until metal detectors are installed and staffed every single morning. That’s honestly terrifying.”

Suffolk County Police had not replied to a request for comment at the time of publication of this report.
