Gym members apprehend shooter at LA Fitness in North Babylon

|

Three LA Fitness gym-goers risked their lives in apprehending a gunman Tuesday at LA Fitness in North Babylon, according to Suffolk police.

Police said it started with a confrontation around 7:15 p.m. between two young men at the fitness center at 1230 Deer Park Ave.

Noah Haynes, 18, of Wyandanch and an unidentified 17-year-old male were allegedly verbally fighting inside the gym before both were asked to leave the premises.

According to police, Haynes returned about a half hour later and confronted the young man who was in the locker room. He allegedly slashed the teen’s neck with a metal object and pointed a handgun at him.

That’s when three gym members risked their safety to hold Haynes down and subdue the alleged shooter until police arrived at the scene.

During the struggle, the gun went off and one shot was fired, but no one was struck by the bullet.

The 17-year-old was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

Haynes was arrested and placed into custody at 7:55 p.m. He is charged with 2nd-degree assault, 1st-degree reckless endangerment, menacing, and 2nd-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

His arraignment is scheduled for Dec. 22.
