We’re not calling it a trend, but when something like this happens twice in the Hamptons in less than a week, we think it’s worth noting.
A homeowner in Amagansett last Friday noticed a stranger fast asleep — in a chair — in their backyard, police said in a East Hampton Star report.
Cops responded to the Scrimshaw Lane address when the homeowner called police to report that he had spotted a pair of shoes on his front lawn, according to the report.
Officers arrived to discover the man — drunk and sleeping in the backyard, the report says. The man told the cops he was visiting from Connecticut and that he thought he was at his home.
Authorities drove the man to house a few minutes away and watched him enter the home without incident. The Scrimshaw Lane homeowner declined to press charges.
Five days earlier — on July 27 — a Brooklyn man was caught snoozing in a stranger’s backyard in the Hamptons, next to an SUV that wasn’t even his, according to Southampton Town Police.
The homeowners were surprised to see an SUV parked in their driveway when they arrived at their Southampton house about 12:57 p.m.
Cops arrived to find 34-year-old Matthew Wynhurst of Brooklyn catching Z’s in the grass. He wasn’t as fortunate as the man in the Amagansett yard; cops arrested him and he was charged with third-degree criminal trespassing.
