A police search for an assault suspect in Hampton Bays on Wednesday caused the temporary lockdown of Hampton Bays Middle School, authorities said.
Southampton Town Police said they received a report about 3:40 p.m. of a man lying unconscious on the ground at the intersection of Ponquogue Avenue and Periwinkle Lane. The man had been kicked in the head by another man.
Southampton Town Police and state troopers responded, along with Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance and Suffolk County Police Medevac.
The victim was flown to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The suspect meanwhile had fled before police arrived, sparking a large search involving Southampton Village K-9 units and the Southampton Town Drone Unit.
Hampton Bays Middle School was placed on lockdown as a precaution during the manhunt.
Police said the suspect, Jamall Thomas, 28, of Hampton Bays, was located about 6:13 p.m. walking along Shinnecock Lane. Thomas was arrested and charged with second-degree assault.
