The Hauppauge community is rallying around the family of a local father who was in a coma following a violent crash last week in Bohemia.
Brian Yost, 41, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital after his 2008 Chevrolet sedan slammed into the rear of a tractor-trailer on Veterans Memorial Highway just before 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, Suffolk County Police said.
The truck was backing into a loading dock and blocking all lanes of traffic when the collision occurred.
In the days since the crash, Yost’s friends and family have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help his loved ones cope with mounting medical bills and everyday expenses as he continues to fight for his life.
Yost was in a coma with multiple brain bleeds and other serious injuries, according to the GoFundMe page, where he is described as a devoted father to his son, Jason, and a loving son to his mother, Patricia.
With Yost serving as the family’s primary provider, relatives said his mother and son now face the dual strain of lost income and overwhelming medical costs.
The GoFundMe page also notes that Yost previously survived a severe motorcycle accident years ago that left him in intensive care for months and required a long rehabilitation. The family said they believes to once again fight to recover.
The fundraiser is intended to help cover hospital bills and living expenses. It had raised $2,700 as of Tuesday afternoon.
