Long Islanders have puppy fever for Labrador Retrievers.
Here’s how we know.
The American Kennel Club conducts a yearly study on the regional popularity of dog breeds across the U.S.
And for 2017, the Labrador Retriever wasn’t only the most sought-after breed on Long Island. It was the most popular breed nationwide.
“The intelligent, family-friendly Labrador Retriever firmly holds onto the number one spot on the most popular list for a record-breaking 27th consecutive year,” said an AKC spokesperson.
However, Long Island’s neighbor, New York City, had a different top dog — not a huge surprise considering there’s a bit less room for a retriever to run in the boroughs.
According to the AKC, the French Bulldog was the most popular breed among the city folk.
“Always a trendsetter, New York City continues its love affair with the French Bulldog as the rest of the world catches on,” said the AKC’s executive secretary, Gina DiNardo. “The Frenchie is a very adaptable breed, making it a great companion for city dwellers.”
